Implant-Supported Dentures
Traditional dentures provide important relief to those who are missing an entire arch of teeth, but they are prone to slipping. Because the prosthetics are not anchored to the jaw, speech and chewing can sometimes feel awkward. Implant-supported dentures provide more stability by connecting the dentures directly to the jawbone.
Dr. Douglas Pohl offers implant-supported dentures at his Fort Walton Beach, FL, clinic. If you have had enough of struggling with a denture that fits improperly and makes eating and speaking difficult, we invite you to learn more about the many benefits of implant dentures.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures restore oral function and can improve your quality of life. The many benefits of this solution include:
- Improved speech
- Boosted confidence
- Restored chewing function
- Stronger biting force
- A natural-looking smile
One very important benefit of implant-supported dentures is the prevention of jawbone recession. Traditional dentures cannot stop this side-effect, which is why they must be constantly refitted. Implant dentures, on the other hand, provide the stimulation necessary to help the jaw retain its shape, which means you can expect to need far fewer adjustments over time.
If you are struggling with dentures that fit poorly and make you feel embarrassed to speak to others, you owe it to yourself to explore the many exceptional benefits of implant-supported dentures.
Am I a Candidate for Implant-Supported Dentures?
Dr. Pohl will examine your teeth, jaws, and medical history when determining if you are a candidate for implant-supported dentures. Patients must have healthy gums and adequate jawbone tissue to support implants. They must also be in good general health.
In general, good candidates for implant-supported dentures are missing an entire arch of teeth. Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes may disqualify you from receiving implants. Smokers must be willing to stop smoking for a few months before surgery. Dr. Pohl will carefully assess your candidacy and provide suggestions for addressing any conditions that disqualify you for treatment.
How the Procedure Works
We want you to feel totally comfortable during treatment. Patients who experience dental phobia may be eligible for sedation, such as nitrous oxide. During the first phase of the procedure, Dr. Pohl will use local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. After making small incisions in your gums and creating pilot holes in the jaw, titanium implants will be inserted and the incisions will be sutured closed. A traditional denture will be adjusted to sit on your gums while you heal.
Over the next four to six months, your implants will integrate with your bone tissue to become permanently fused. Once Dr. Pohl confirms that this process is complete, he can begin crafting your permanent denture. With your implant-supported denture in place, you can expect to experience exceptional stability and restored function.
